Malta Student Visa – Application and Requirements

Studying in Malta, the picturesque island nation known for its rich history, vibrant culture, and excellent educational opportunities? If so, it’s essential to understand the visa requirements and application process to make your educational journey seamless and stress-free.

Do I Need a Visa to Study in Malta?

The first question on your mind might be whether you need a visa to study in Malta. The answer depends on your nationality. If you are from an EU/EEA country or Switzerland, you can study and live in Malta without a visa for any duration of time. However, if you’re from a non-EU/EEA country or Switzerland, a visa is necessary for studying in Malta.

Short-term study courses, lasting up to three months, might not require a visa for those exempt from Schengen visa requirements. However, for longer programs such as BA and MA degrees, which extend beyond three months, a Malta student visa is mandatory.

Malta Student Visa Application Process

Once you’ve determined that you need a visa to study in Malta, the next step is to navigate the application process. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Contact the Maltese embassy, consulate, or a visa application office in your country to schedule an appointment for submitting your visa application.
  2. Gather all the necessary documents required for a Malta student visa. These typically include:
    • Valid passport with at least two blank pages.
    • Fully completed and signed application form.
    • Two passport-size photos with a bright background.
    • Letter of acceptance from the university or educational institution.
    • Proof of financial means to support yourself during your studies.
    • Valid health insurance covering medical expenses in the Schengen Area.
    • Language proficiency test results for Malta.
  3. On the day of your appointment, submit the application form, along with the required documents and fee payment. Ensure that the application form is filled out accurately and signed.
  4. Wait for the processing of your visa application. The typical processing time is four weeks, although it may vary depending on various factors. You will receive a notification from the embassy regarding the status of your application.

After Entering Malta with a Student Visa

Once you’ve obtained your Malta student visa and arrived in the country, there are additional steps to take:

  1. Apply for a Maltese temporary residence permit within the first three months of your arrival. This permit allows you to stay in Malta for longer than one year. EU/EEA/Swiss citizens need to obtain a registration certificate within the same timeframe.
  2. If your study program extends beyond one year, you must renew your residence permit accordingly.

Can I Work in Malta With a Student Visa?

One of the common queries among international students is whether they can work while studying in Malta. The answer is yes, but with limitations. With a student visa, you can apply for an employment license and work part-time for a maximum of 20 hours per week. However, your primary focus should remain on your studies.

Family Reunion and Permanent Residence in Malta

If you plan to bring your family with you to Malta, they can apply for a family visa for the purpose of reunion. Eligible family members include your spouse and minor children, provided you can financially support them.

As for permanent residence in Malta, it’s not attainable directly through a student visa. However, after completing your studies and finding employment, you can transition to a work visa. After residing in Malta for five years on a work visa, you become eligible to apply for a permanent residence permit.

Studying in Malta offers a unique opportunity to experience a blend of academic excellence and Mediterranean charm. By understanding the visa requirements and application process outlined above, you can embark on your educational journey with confidence and ease. Whether you’re drawn to Malta’s historical sites, vibrant cultural scene, or renowned educational institutions, your adventure awaits!
